The Zimbabwe UNWTO Candidate for Secretary of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Eng. Walter Mzembi, landed an AfricanUnion (AU) Leadership position in Lome, Togo on 17 March 2017.
African Tourism, Energy and Infrastructure Ministers in Togo for the AU STC Meetings reaffirm their faith in Zimbabwe leadership in Tourism and elected the Hon. Eng. Walter Mzembi, Tourism & Hospitality Industry Government of Zimbabwe, as their Vice Chair of the Bureau of the AU-STC.
This is seen as another important step to accept the Zimbabwe minister to lead UNWTO starting 2018.
A delegação do Zimbabué à Primeira Sessão Ordinária do Comité Técnico Especializado (STC) da União Africana (UA) sobre Transportes, Infraestruturas Transcontinentais e Inter-regionais, Energia e Turismo, liderada pelo Vice-Ministro do Turismo e Indústria Hoteleira, Exmo. Anastancia Ndhlovu (MP), deixou o Zimbábue orgulhoso depois que a nação da África Austral foi eleita por unanimidade para o cargo de vice-presidente. O UA-STC reuniu-se a 17 de março de 2017 em Lomé, Togo e elegeu a Mesa com base na Regra Número 16 do Regulamento Interno da Comissão da União Africana sobre Infraestruturas e Energia.
A Mesa é composta pelo Presidente, 3 Vice-Presidentes, bem como um Relator. O Zimbabué foi eleito o 2º Vice-Presidente, representando o sector do Turismo e a região da África Austral no AU-STC para os próximos dois anos, até 2019. Os outros membros da Mesa que se reunirão uma vez por ano são o Togo -Presidente (representando o sector dos Transportes e a região da África Ocidental), Mauritânia-1º Vice-presidente (representando o sector da Energia e a região Norte de África), Etiópia-3º Vice-presidente (representando o sector da Energia e a região da África Oriental) e Congo-Relator (representando o sector dos transportes e a região da África Central). A Mesa é o Órgão Executivo dos Ministros responsável pelos sectores das Infra-estruturas, Energia, Transportes e Turismo, encarregado de fornecer um papel de liderança política e de supervisão aos Programas de Trabalho da Comissão da União Africana sobre Infra-estruturas e Energia e ao Comité Técnico Especializado de Peritos.
A eleição do Zimbabué para o Gabinete da Comissão de Infraestruturas e Energia da União Africana ocorreu quase um ano após mais um mandato bem sucedido da Presidência da UA do Zimbabué por Sua Excelência o Presidente, Cde RG Mugabe, de Janeiro de 2015 a Janeiro de 2016. nesta eleição, o exultante Vice-Ministro Exmo. Anastancia Ndhlovu disse: “Esta eleição é a aprovação e o endosso do grande trabalho feito pelo maior filho de África, Sua Excelência, o Presidente RG Mugabe, quando orientou a Cimeira da UA para uma adoção histórica da Agenda 2063, ancorada no Plano 2030 Metas de desenvolvimento sustentável. Isso é realmente muito emocionante e só confirma o legado da liderança inigualável de Sua Excelência, o Presidente”.
The election of Zimbabwe to lead the Southern Region of Africa in the Bureau of the African Union Commission on Infrastructure and Energy representing the Tourism sector, is happening when the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Hon. Dr. Walter Mzembi has successfully submitted his application to become the next Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), for the next 4 years, from 2018 to 2021, to the Headquarters of the Madrid-based global tourism organization. Hon. Dr Walter Mzembi is currently continuing with his world-wide outreach effort to garner international support for the countrys bid represented by him to secure the top job at the UNWTO. Elections for the next Secretary General will take place at the UNWTO Headquarters in Madrid, Spain from 11 to 12 May 2017, during the course of the 105th session of the Organisations 33 member Executive Council meeting.
Asked what the election into AU-STC Bureau means to Zimbabwe’s bid for the top UNWTO post, Deputy Minister Anastancia Ndhlovu had this to say, “I can confirm that the election of Zimbabwe further re-affirms the visionary leadership qualities of Hon. Minister Mzembi, as the current Chairperson of the UNWTO Regional Commission for Africa (CAF) and the African Union-endorsed candidate for the UNWTO post, who has been very articulate on Zimbabwe’s and African tourism issues at a global scale. Therefore, this election will definitely be a boost to Hon. Minister Mzembi’s election bid, since the policy issues we pushed through to the apex of the African Union Commission on Infrastructure and Energy today reflect his vision for Africa’s tourism and the global tourism industry”.
A eleição unânime do Zimbabué para liderar o Gabinete do AU-STC na área do Turismo ocorreu no contexto de uma discussão prolongada nas reuniões do STC que viram o Zimbabué assumir uma posição a favor da integração e da institucionalização do turismo na Agenda 2063 da UA e suas estruturas, respectivamente. A excelente apresentação e articulação dessas questões políticas pelo Zimbábue rendeu dividendos quando a Comissão da União Africana de Infraestrutura e Energia concordou em estabelecer uma Direção ou Unidade de Turismo nas estruturas da Organização até dezembro de 2018, a fim de fornecer apoio político e coordenação de a proposta da Organização de Turismo Africano. Atualmente, não há presença física do turismo em todas as estruturas das AUC, apesar da celebração do setor como a terceira atividade econômica depois de combustíveis e produtos químicos, em escala global.
The UNWTO 2016 Report indicates that global tourism grew by 4.6% in the year 2015 while Africa declined by 3% in the same year, the trend Zimbabwe is fighting to reverse for the benefit of all African countries and other developing tourist destinations of the world.
